Students closely look at and maneuver globes to better understand and get a sense of longitude and latitude, International Dateline and Time Zones, the cycle of Seasons and Day and Night, Continents, Oceans, Weather and Climate, and Political Divisions and groups. When I was a new Social Studies teacher, I quickly found out that most of my students had no idea where, for instance, North America was in relation to Hawaii. It was a very limited view of the world. I try to provide activities to help them broaden their world views and get a perspective on where and what is Hawaii, and to understand the relationship between physical environments and culture.
