My students have taken advantage of the classroom materials for several projects and daily lessons. The students were always very excited to see what had arrived as the packages started trickling in over the course of several weeks. It was like Christmas! \r\n\r\nOne of the daily lessons that has been enhanced is our periodic use of audiovisual resources. The headphones we've received have made the process of listening to these stories and instructions so much easier. The students can all hear correctly, and they don't have to compete with each other's computer volume.\r\n\r\nWe have engaged in multiple poster projects, including a perspectives project that focused on the essential question, \"Is ignorance bliss?\" This question was raised as part of reading the dystopian fiction, Fahrenheit 451. In addition to responding to how the question pertains to the story, students were also asked to apply it to today's society and our use of technology to \"make life easier.\"\r\n\r\nHaving these supplies gives me the freedom to create many different projects because I know students have the materials to be successful.","fullyFundedDate":1757861082767,"projectUrl":"project/learning-beyond-worksheets/9706611/","projectTitle":"Learning Beyond Worksheets","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Quistorff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9968858"},{"teacherId":9338261,"projectId":9773069,"letterContent":"Your generosity has made a powerful difference for my students here in Kona, Hawai'i. They come to school each day eager to learn, and many are building English skills while navigating new academic expectations. Knowing that they are supported by caring donors helps them feel seen, valued, and encouraged.\r\n\r\nWith the supplies from this project, I've been able to provide nourishing snacks, easy meals, and engaging reward items that support students throughout the school day. These resources are woven into our daily routines helping students maintain focus during lessons, boosting morale when learning feels challenging, and celebrating effort and growth in positive ways.\r\n\r\nWhen the items arrived, students were genuinely excited and thankful. Several asked who made this possible and were amazed to learn that people they've never met wanted to help them succeed. That moment sparked meaningful conversations about kindness, gratitude, and community.\r\n\r\nThese materials continue to support our classroom as students work on strengthening academic skills and building confidence. By removing small barriers like hunger or fatigue, students are better able to participate, collaborate, and persevere. With the beautiful supplies I was able to purchase, I will be able to lead several projects that I have never been about to teach the students before because the supplies were so far out of my school budget. Now, students will have a creative outlet and fun way to learn about art from around the world.\r\n\r\nBecause our school population is so diverse, students thrive when school is infused with games, art, music and hands-on projects. I can look out at the students in my classroom and see a dozen or more different races, languages, cultures and ethnicities represented. We are a Title I school, so many of our students live below the poverty line and often, their families struggle to make ends meet. If it wasn't for grants and programs like donors choose, students would not have access to quality art supplies like the ones I ordered through this project. I would be able to order basic materials with my purchase order money, but I would never be able to afford the specialized materials that I was able to get with help from Donors Choose. With the new computer, more students can actively participate in data analysis instead of waiting for a turn or watching from the sidelines. In astronomy, students are using professional software to analyze telescope data, measure the brightness of stars, and investigate real phenomena rather than simulated examples. This hands-on access helps them better understand how scientists collect evidence, analyze data, and draw conclusions.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is knowing their work is authentic. They are motivated by the fact that the data they analyze comes from real observatories and that their results can become science fair projects or research presentations. Students who enjoy technology, problem-solving, and visual learning have especially connected with this work—many who are quieter during lectures become highly engaged when working with data and software, collaborating with peers to troubleshoot and interpret results.\r\n\r\nThe dehydrators will allow students to extend this same authentic learning into biology by preserving local mushroom samples for DNA sequencing as part of a community science partnership. Having access to this equipment means students can plan longer-term investigations and contribute to real biodiversity research in Hawaiʻi. Together, these tools help students see themselves as scientists—capable of meaningful work that connects their curiosity to real-world research and their local environment.","fullyFundedDate":1759200142650,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-stars-and-species-expanding-a/9773092/","projectTitle":"Exploring Stars and Species: Expanding Astronomy Research and Preserving Fungi","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Pickett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8822841"},{"teacherId":8822841,"projectId":9397711,"letterContent":"This project has had a direct impact on how my students learn astronomy by giving them access to computers capable of running professional science software. Unlike Chromebooks, these computers allow students to download and use programs such as AstroImageJ, TOPCAT, and Python—tools astronomers actually use in research. With this access, students are no longer limited to simulations or pre-made examples. Instead, they analyze real telescope data, work with authentic datasets, and practice the same skills scientists use to study the universe.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is that the work feels real. Using the new computers, students have already analyzed exoplanet transit data, measuring changes in a star's brightness to detect distant planets orbiting other suns. Seeing a light curve they generated themselves—and realizing it represents a real planetary system—has been incredibly motivating. Students who enjoy problem-solving, coding, or data analysis have especially warmed to this technology, often staying engaged longer and collaborating with peers to troubleshoot and interpret results.\r\n\r\nThese computers have allowed me to design lessons that center on inquiry, data literacy, and scientific thinking rather than rote learning. They empower students to build skills that connect directly to college-level science and STEM careers, while also sending an important message: they belong in science, and their curiosity is worth investing in. Many of my students are eager to use technology not just to look at information, but to design, build, and problem-solve in meaningful ways. The 3D printer gives them that opportunity by allowing ideas to become physical objects they can examine, test, and improve.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is the ability to create something of their own. They are especially interested in designing custom models, science tools, and visual aids that help make complex science and math concepts easier to understand. The photos I've shared show examples of the types of models students are excited to design and use as part of their learning.\r\n\r\nThe new filament, nozzle, and dehydrators will play an important role in keeping the printer running smoothly and consistently—especially in our humid Hawaiʻi climate. Having reliable materials means students can focus on learning and iteration instead of being discouraged by technical failures or wasted time.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who learn best by doing have already expressed enthusiasm about working with this technology. For visual and hands-on learners, being able to build and manipulate physical models creates new ways to engage with content and show understanding.
