One way to get teens to put down their phones and get lost in reading is to let them have books that truly capture their attention. In the past, manga may have been dismissed as elementary, but they can be useful in increasing literacy among teens, especially those in high-risk groups who typically shy away from reading. Students who are reluctant readers of traditional texts used in the classroom can find themselves totally immersed in stories through manga, allowing them to build up their reading skills while having fun. Students will be hooked on reading manga. As enrichment material, the manga series will introduce Japanese level 1 students to new perspectives and Japanese cultural norms. Along with language acquisition, students will experience what it is like to see the world through the eyes of their favorite manga characters.
