Students will use this paper to create highly advanced drawings and watercolor paintings using the classical drawing techniques that I studied at the Long Island Academy of Fine Art. The classical drawing techniques are a very specific 3 stage process that teach students how to develop a strong eye or improve the strong eye they already have and accurately represent any subject matter they look at in real life in a highly detailed and realistic style. These techniques can be used with almost any drawing medium and the first 2 stages can be used to start the creation of a detailed watercolor painting. The classical drawing techniques teach students how to see the world around them in a very specific way and then how to put what they see on paper accurately. Many students may not even realize how well they see the world and can recreate it as a drawing or painting until they learn these techniques. They have been greatly impactful to many of my students and personally changed my life after I studied them. Representational foundational drawing techniques like this benefit students stylized and abstract work as well because of the strong eye they develop, the execution and use of contour lines, value shapes, and actual value which are key elements of art in all types of artwork. I often tell my students that after you learn the traditional "rules" of art you have better ideas on how to manipulate, change, and break them for more creative styles and abstraction. This project specifically benefits students after a year of pandemic learning because in order to learn and use these techniques students will need to have many social interaction through a variety of peer group activities such as compositional development, work in progress discussions, and group presentations.
