Students have a place to keep their pencils and materials organized, and our classroom calendar and everyday supplies help us stay prepared for learning. These may seem like small things, but having the materials we need allows students to spend more time learning and less time searching for supplies.\r\n\r\nOne of the most special parts of this project has been the birthday supplies. Being able to recognize each student on their birthday has brought so many smiles to our classroom. These celebrations help students feel seen, appreciated, and included. The kits also help set up our students for their transition to middle school as they have the opportunity to enter 6th grade ready for the robotics/technology curriculum available to them. The individual writing boards are being used across many areas of learning. Students practice letters, sounds, words, and early writing skills, but we also use them during math to create and solve equations, practice numbers, and show our mathematical thinking.\r\n\r\nThe building blocks, shapes, and STEM materials have added another exciting hands-on component to our learning. Students use the different shapes to create and extend patterns, explore shapes and spatial relationships, and practice important early math concepts while building and creating.\r\n\r\nThese materials are also teaching lessons that go far beyond academics. As students build and explore together, they are learning how to share materials, take turns, communicate their ideas, solve problems together, and work cooperatively with their classmates. Our 22 students have been so excited to explore with the handheld microscope, binoculars and telescope, discovering the smallest things around our playground and observing the world in new ways. The tiny purple flower was found in the grass outside our classroom. The children drew their version for you. Also, the students wrote a special thank you note telling you their favorite \"science tool.\" The magnetic bricks were a loved favorite by everyone in the classroom. The students have built amazing creations with them. These students are asking to do the science activities and are excited about experimenting with the magnetic movers and rings, the butterfly garden, and the plant viewer. The students are learning how to investigate, build, and discover as scientist. They are also learning how to care for and safely use our new materials. We are working on a project now that the students are writing about what they want to be when they grow up. We have several that have chosen science as a field. Especially in our new books section. The bins allow students to see the books and take the whole container off the shelf.
