Both Peptide and Ecologies have proven to be fun, interactive ways to engage students in our class content and get them to make meaningful connections to what they've been learning. We tried out Ecologies first as an enrichment activity after our ecology unit, and it was awesome. It gave students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of biomes (including ones they'd never heard of before!) and discover cool organisms at every level of the food chain. Students made connections beyond what we covered in class, and many were excited to share new species and interactions they encountered during gameplay.\r\n\r\nJust this past week I introduced Peptide in both my regular biology and AP biology classes. Despite the complexity of protein synthesis, students at both levels had a great time gamifying this challenging concept. The game helped break down abstract ideas into something more tangible, and I saw increased confidence as students began to better understand the interrelated roles of various cell parts like mitochondria, ribosomes, and the nucleus. It also helped them understand the importance of ATP as an energy source for the cell's many complex jobs.\r\n\r\nIt was really neat to see students collaborating, asking questions, and fully immersing themselves in the learning process while playing both of these games. The next step with ecologies is to use it as an interactive assessment next year. Once students learn the mechanics of game play and have a chance to explore the various ecosystems, they will demonstrate their understanding by applying unit vocabulary to their creations and predicting possible consequences of ecosystem disruption.\r\n\r\nThis has been a wonderful first go at both games, and I'm already looking forward to further integrating them next year!","fullyFundedDate":1755688888936,"projectUrl":"project/building-biologists-learning-science-th/9572597/","projectTitle":"Building Biologists: Learning Science Through Strategic Gameplay","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mendal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5926641_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1538154798783","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-mendal"},{"teacherId":5926641,"projectId":9947003,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, my students have been able to dive deeply into the central dogma of biology using the miniPCR BioBits lab kits in a way that feels authentic and exciting. Instead of only learning about transcription and translation from diagrams and simulation models, students conducted hands-on experiments where they actually observed these processes occurring in real time. Using fluorescence they could clearly see when transcription and translation were successful, with each process producing a different color. The design of the experiment provided meaningful opportunities to create and discuss the importance of both positive and negative controls, and its captivating nature led to thoughtful questions and outstanding discussion about the challenging molecular biology topics we have been learning in class.\r\n\r\nThe chance to use micropipettes and handle real molecular samples made them feel like working scientists, and they took that responsibility seriously. Many students commented on how \"cool\" it was to see glowing results that confirmed what they had learned in theory, and to use the tools of \"real scientists\". Even students who are typically more reserved were eager to participate, ask questions, and handle our laboratory materials. The combination of hands-on tools and visible results made the learning experience both accessible and memorable. This activity required two consecutive class periods, and students were excited to come back and check on the progress of their experiment. \r\n\r\nYour support has not only brought complex biological processes to life, but it has also inspired students to think and act like scientists.","fullyFundedDate":1767204623331,"projectUrl":"project/making-molecular-biology-accessible-by-m/9947003/","projectTitle":"Making Molecular Biology Accessible by Making it GLOW!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mendal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5926641_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1538154798783","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-mendal"},{"teacherId":10010555,"projectId":9305393,"letterContent":"The headphones have been a game-changer in my Spanish class. Which things are popular and why in both the U.S. and in Mexico. Many students were blown away with how spicy some of the snack mixes were as well as the fact that many of the Mexican candies and snacks were sweet, sour and spicy. \r\nThere was a lot of laughing and smiling as students were able to try the different items.
