Being able to bring in kinesthetic movements during class time will benefit students in multiple ways. In our modern society asking students to sit still for a long period of time and focus is difficult.
My students have to struggle daily to overcome distractions, stress and other personal issues in order to learn. For students suffering from ADD and ADHD, bodily movement or fidget tools help them to calm their body and focus their mind. Squishy stress relief toys, fidget pencil toppers, marble fidget tools, and fidget chains can help kids keep part of their body moving so that their mind can focus in on their work.
For students who are in a permanent flight or fight reaction due to chronic stress or PTSD, subtle and specific movements associated with yoga and meditation practices can help to quiet the body's stress reaction and engage the parasympathetic nervous system so that students can relax and focus on schoolwork. The yoga bolster cushions will help students who need a "mindful moment" in class to medidate or to position their bodies to release tension. This will help engage their parasympathetic nervous system so that they can be ready to learn.
Finally, students that are kinesthetic learners will find that hands on activities using Kiddie Dough and the Twisteez can help them to better understand vocabulary words, literary concepts, and scenes in novels; making it easier to demonstrate their understanding in a nonlinguistic way. My hope is that I can provide some simple tools to help my students to overcome whatever is standing in the way of their learning.
