Which things are popular and why in both the U.S. and in Mexico. Many students were blown away with how spicy some of the snack mixes were as well as the fact that many of the Mexican candies and snacks were sweet, sour and spicy. \r\nThere was a lot of laughing and smiling as students were able to try the different items. They spark curiosity, deepen empathy, and make reading a joy instead of a chore. I've seen students who were once reluctant readers now eagerly choosing books during free time, sharing recommendations with friends, and even asking for sequels.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has created opportunities for students to fall in love with reading—and that is a gift that will last a lifetime. The P51 molecular fluorescence viewers and the miniPCR BioBits have provided a super cool way for my students to engage with science that would normally be visually out of reach. Your generosity has allowed us to explore the microscopically small world of molecular biology in a way that captivated student curiosity and deepened their understanding of complex biological processes. One of the most exciting aspects of this experience was the ability to actually see evidence of how a cell converts coded DNA messages into actual functioning proteins. This happens in two main steps---transcription and translation---and both of them are far too tiny to see happen under a typical light microscope in our biology lab, which typically means students just have to take my word for it when I tell them what happens in their cells. But with the BioBits kit and P51 viewers, students can see real-time, GLOWING evidence first of mRNA production (transcription) and then subsequently protein synthesis (translation). The mRNA and protein glow different colors, making this a visually stunning experiment that helped my students make a direct connection between the theory they've been learning and the biological processes unfolding before their eyes. Plus, since the lab setup requires the use of micropipettes in order to dispense tiny amounts of reagents, students were thrilled to try out lab equipment that was totally new to them and they got to feel like \"real scientists\" engaging in cutting-edge research.\r\n\r\nFor my AP Biology students, this experiment was a perfect opportunity to reinforce and expand on our recent lessons about gene structure and the regulation of gene expression. Students were able to hypothesize about the expected results of transcription and translation and then confirm their predictions by seeing the glowing colors---or evaluate errors in experimental setup and brainstorm reasons for variations in results. The experience brought content like promoter and terminator regulatory sequences to life, making it feel tangible and real. Additionally, students were able to make connections between the experiment and the use of antibiotics to fight off infections. This kit uses kanamycin in one of the experimental setups, which gave the students an opportunity to explore how intentionally disrupting the flow of genetic information from DNA to mRNA to protein in specific ways can be used in modern medicine.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, I hope to be able to re-order this BioBits kit again next year as part of our annual science budget now that we have a class set of the P51 molecule fluorescence viewers. Although this year it was piloted by my AP students, I have no doubt that this will be accessible for and make an impact on my regular biology students as well---perhaps even more-so. The lab is easily adapted for engaging lower-level students in the basics of gene expression. I am looking forward to ALL of our biology students across all levels having access to this experience next year!","fullyFundedDate":1731512607124,"projectUrl":"project/understanding-biology-by-making-it-glow/8592949/","projectTitle":"Understanding Biology by Making It Glow!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mendal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5926641_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1538154798783","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-mendal"},{"teacherId":5901583,"projectId":8968831,"letterContent":"My students have enjoyed the items that were purchased from this project. It is big hit with the kindergarteners who love to \"feed the pig\", as they practice the speech sounds in therapy. It is also help them to practice counting and using short sentences to request items. Another important skills while playing the game is my students get to practice turn taking skills. Many children in the 5-6 year old range have subtle weaknesses with their social language/pragmatic language skills. Playing games provide a structured tasks to practice pro-social skills. My students needs to have motivation to work on skills that are very difficult for them. This game has provided a motivator to work and practice.\r\n In closing, I heartfully thank you for providing materials to help me work with my students on improving their communication skills.
