That being said, the implementation of this project is a very slow and steady process. I have been giving my students guided lessons on how to use the materials in the corner. I have been very clear that until I think they are ready they will be told when they may use the area. Those in genuine distress have been directed calmly to use the materials and most have come back to the lesson in minutes! The biggest struggle is making sure the area isn't seen as a novelty or playtime, but is used for its proper purpose. It has been a very strong tool for students that I actually did not expect. I have had no students need to take a break outside of the room. Students experiencing emotional regulation issues usually would need to take a walk or get some water but now have a designated area. This helps them deescalate very quickly! I hope to expand the use of this area to student initiated once it has become a regular part of our class routine and add even more calming materials with time.
