Reading helps build confidence, improves focus, and provides students with the ability to transport themselves into another place while learning empathy and broadening their horizons.\r\n\r\nWorking in a low income district, often students are not exposed to reading at home. Whether parents are working and cannot bring students to the library, or costs prohibits the purchase of books, it is clear that students who are in low income districts are placed at a disadvantage. \r\n\r\nI am so grateful for the books that have been donated to our classroom. Reading is one of my passions, and I try to incorporate reading throughout our day. I read aloud to the class almost everyday, and students are currently reading independently to build their stamina several times throughout the week. \r\n\r\nSome of these new books will be used for small book groups, and some will be used for novel study. When the boxes started to arrive, I could see the excitement on many of their faces, as this cohort is comprised of great readers. I am excited to start using these books (as you can see from our pictures, one group has already started!). \r\n\r\nAgain, many thanks for your donation. Students have been able to become engineers as they design, build, test, and improve structures. One of the most exciting parts has been watching students discover that their first design does not always work—and that is okay! Our sensory bin now has some extra items which the kids can grab and use to calm down or just sit and relax. The sensory maze mats are so much fun as well as the sensory pull strings. That being said, the implementation of this project is a very slow and steady process. I have been giving my students guided lessons on how to use the materials in the corner. I have been very clear that until I think they are ready they will be told when they may use the area. Those in genuine distress have been directed calmly to use the materials and most have come back to the lesson in minutes! The biggest struggle is making sure the area isn't seen as a novelty or playtime, but is used for its proper purpose. It has been a very strong tool for students that I actually did not expect. I have had no students need to take a break outside of the room. Students experiencing emotional regulation issues usually would need to take a walk or get some water but now have a designated area. This helps them deescalate very quickly! I hope to expand the use of this area to student initiated once it has become a regular part of our class routine and add even more calming materials with time.
