Students use the xylophones and metallophones mostly in second and third grade as a branch off of the Orff music methodology. By teaching them the technique and using the pitched percussion they can learn simple repeating parts that combine to make a greater whole reinforcing steady beat, practice techniques, and correct use of instruments. This is also a great way to engage students who normally don't enjoy singing or movement activities such as children who are shy. The process of scaffolding and practicing towards a performance goal in the classroom is a great way to train students about the rewards of good musicianship. When the students perform a piece together and recognize that it sounds good, and put it into words, that does wonders for motivation and focus. It also provides different material from other cultures combining with drums and other percussion instruments to vary our content.
