We explored how dance is more than movement—it is storytelling. Students learned how hand gestures, facial expressions, and rhythm communicate stories about nature, ancestry, and daily life. Working in small groups, they choreographed short routines inspired by themes like the ocean, community, and celebration. The excitement in the room was incredible as students practiced with focus and pride.\r\n\r\nWe also studied traditional Polynesian attire and the meaning behind different materials and designs. Students were fascinated to learn how clothing is carefully crafted using natural elements and how each piece enhances the story being told through dance. Using the materials you provided, they created their own inspired headpieces, leis, and decorative skirts. Seeing them wear their creations while performing their dances was a powerful moment—they truly felt connected to what they were learning.\r\n\r\nNext, students will present their dances and explain the meaning behind their attire in a small classroom showcase. This project has built confidence, creativity, and cultural appreciation in ways that a textbook alone never could. Testing went so smoothly because they were all charged in the charge stations, and I had enough for each student.\r\n\r\nI also use the stations to charge their personally assigned laptops while they borrow one of mine. Another unforeseen bonus: I can charge their confiscated cell phones and lock them up inside the charging box as well! When they first saw them, their excitement was immediate—many couldn't wait to try them on and explore how they could move differently and more confidently in class. The sneakers quickly became more than just footwear; they became tools that allowed students to fully engage in our dance lessons and express themselves physically without limitation.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the sneakers in a variety of ways. Last year, students wore them for our music video, which helped them practice proper technique and feel more comfortable experimenting with movement. This year, they became an essential part of our showcase performances, allowing students to shine on stage while performing complex choreography safely and confidently. One standout moment was during our group routine when students saw how synchronized and polished their movements looked in the new sneakers—it was a proud moment for the whole class.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these sneakers will continue to be a vital resource for our classroom. Students are excited to use them in upcoming units and performances where they will learn new choreography, explore creative movement projects, and even collaborate on designing their own routines. As I said in my pitch, our new curriculum in SFUSD is primarily online using a platform called Desmos. This platform allows the students to explore mathematical concepts using digital manipulatives. \r\n\r\nFor example, students were asked to create a linear equation to map the change in height of a flag over a few seconds. They worked by identifying the starting height (y-intercept) and then the rate of change (slope) to create a graph. They were able to draw the graph on the Desmos software, and the software showed a real-time flag rendition of their graph compared to the flag they were supposed to graph. This way, the students could see what they needed to change about their graph to make them match.\r\n\r\nIn another unit, the students were introduced to Geometric Transformations through an online CPM Math, or College Preparatory Mathematics, website. Students were asked to get the key into the lock by using Translations, Rotations, and Reflections. The website allowed students to use trial and error to understand how each of these transformations work. Then learning from the patterns that emerged from each transformation, they were able to move the key to the lock on the screen.\r\n\r\nWithout these donated computers, I would not have been able to do these lessons, and many more. I am so grateful to all of your donations and that I am now fortunate enough to have my own classroom set of computers. I no longer stress out before a computer lesson! I no longer pray that enough of my students have their own laptops to access the new Desmos Curriculum! I can just teach all lessons I want in class, both on paper and online.
