My English Language Development (ELD) class will be working on a literacy unit to help cultivate a culture of reading. In doing so, we will be exploring and becoming familiar with multiple book genres. My goal is for my students to be aware of all the options that are available to them and to determine which types of books engage them in becoming avid readers. My until will also require a class set of the book Home of the Brave because we will be reading this text as a whole group. Students will be introduced to new vocabulary, themes and most importantly be able to identify with the character's struggle to assimilate to a new culture. In reading this text, students will not only develop their reading/vocabulary skills but also their writing abilities. We will be responding to different situations that occur in the text and make connections to our everyday lives. Students will finally be able to write their own story about themselves using poetry verses like the author of the text, Katherine Applegate.
