Having these materials centrally located and available to all students is helpful for them, and such an essential part of what we can offer students in the library. Thanks to your generosity through DonorsChoose, Fridays at lunchtime have become a special time for students to create, connect, and unwind.\r\n\r\nCreativity and connection are at the heart of our club. Jewelry-making is a favorite, but in the short time we have been meeting this semester, we've also painted birdhouses, created fuse bead art, and made keychains, pins, and more. Just as meaningful as the projects are the conversations around the table, where students connect with friends, meet new classmates, and share stories in their native languages and/or English.\r\n\r\nThe club has also become a welcoming space for the wider school community. Students and staff in the Wellness Center see what we are making and often join in. Your support allows me to welcome anyone who wants to participate, fostering community and belonging in a relaxed, low-pressure environment.\r\n\r\nRecently, two staff members joined us for a painting session, creating a birdhouse and decorating a picture frame. It was a wonderful reminder that creating together benefits adults, too, offering a chance to slow down, unwind, and connect with students outside our usual busy routines.\r\n\r\nBeing able to provide snacks allows me to do hold the club during lunch, so that students do not miss class time in order to participate in the club.\r\n\r\nI'm deeply grateful to offer students this space where creativity brings people together and connections happen naturally. When I thought about what some of the best supports for struggling readers were when I taught high school English, I remembered the \"high/low\" books that for some kids were the only books they had ever read or enjoyed. Even before meeting the students at my new school, I knew there would be kids who would appreciate those books - so with your help, that is what I ordered! When I arrived, and the books arrived, I connected with one of my new colleagues, a 9th grade teacher with a strong SSR/independent reading program in his class, to give the books a good home there with his students.\r\n\r\nMr. M reports that his kids are loving the books, and that they have been in heavy rotation for independent reading time. When I facilitated our district's fall reading diagnostic and analyzed the data, I found that we do indeed have many high shool students who are reading at the elementary levels - they want books with teenage topics and themes, but don't have the reading skills to access most \"Young Adult\" titles.
