It has exceeded my expectations in many ways: the level of student interest in spending their lunch break making crafts, the creativity students have shown, the fun they have had, and the diversity of students who have come together. At times, multiple languages can be heard as students talk to friends who speak their same first language. At other times, English is used to communicate cross-culturally, whether it is to ask \"Can you pass the scissors?\" or to say \"I like what you are making!\".\r\n\r\nSo far, we have been offering craft activities for 6 weeks, each Friday at lunchtime. The first week we made paper flowers for the beautiful Día de los Muertos altar we set up in our Wellness Center. The following week was Halloween, and we made Halloween wreaths. Next, we made pins (buttons). Last week we made Shrinky Dink keychains. Although Shrinky Dinks are from my childhood and kids today walk around with mini-computers, it was like magic to them when their creations shrunk and became thicker in the toaster oven! It was so fun to watch. Today, some kids continued with Shrinky Dinks (making either keychains or magnets) and others made bracelets. \r\n\r\nMuch of school time is spent being serious, and some kids do not feel connected to others at school. Having a weekly club where students can focus on fun, creativity, and community is invaluable. Through the donation of gloves and the fire blanket, I have been able to create an environment in which not only do students see their safety being taken as a priority, but where they feel the agency to protect their own safety. The bottles donated have been a huge help in making sure that each group has had equitable access to resources, and the drying rack has helped me and my TA's maintain our sanity when cleaning up after labs. \r\n\r\nFinally, the notebooks donated have been extremely helpful. Given that Oakland High is a Title I school, not every student has the ability to provide their own notebook. I have not only been able to provide notebooks for those who need them this year, but now have a supply that will be able to support my students next year as well.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you. The Sensory Room is located across from the shared student bathroom between two classes and as we were setting up the items, our students would walk by with quiet \"Wow!\"s, surprised faces, and huge smiles. \r\n\r\nOnce we officially opened for use, this room is officially serving it's exact purpose - a Sensory Sanctuary. From seeing our students attempting to self-regulate in a space that was blank, bleak, and flooded by fluorescent lights to now witnessing our students independently self-advocating to now spend time in the Sensory Room to fully sit and soak in the space and regulate their emotional and sensory needs. \r\n\r\nWe're incredibly grateful for the kindness you've extended to us and to witness the profound the impact this space has made for our Oakland High Special Education students. Having snacks, fidgets, and school supplies to offer makes it clear to students in this first meeting that I mean it when I say my job is to support them!\r\n\r\nReturning students come by for snacks and end up telling me about something they could use support with; others come by for support and feel welcomed because I offer them tea, snacks, and/or school supplies.\r\n\r\nRecently, students have been coming in wanting to make bracelets, and it has been fun to be able to offer those supplies.
