I want to empower young people to make a positive change for themselves and their community. Being a white female, I have come to realize that the norms established by culture disproportionately benefit me. I see this is my call to action - to remove barriers to success and contribution that others face that I did not. Every person we lose from the ranks of healthy and educated becomes a responsibility for the institutions that operate our communities. There is more need than there is human capital. Education is a way to tilt this balance towards the other direction and the spectacular young people of the Oakland community should be lifted up and celebrated for their natural strengths of diversity and community values.
