We began introducing counting collections using the materials from this project. I cannot even begin to describe the way their faces lit up when I introduced the variety of counting collections. If you are unfamiliar with counting collections, I'd like to provide a brief overview of what it is and its benefits. \r\n\r\nCounting collections is an effective, student-centered math routine where children count, group, and organize tangible objects (e.g., buttons, blocks, natural items) to build deep, foundational numeracy skills. Key benefits include improved number sense, strengthened one-to-one correspondence, enhanced fine motor skills, and increased confidence through hands-on, self-directed, and flexible counting strategies. \r\n\r\nGone are the days of rote memorization or rote counting. Counting Collections provides more engagement and more flexibility for our students. Thank you for unlocking a new world for them and providing more flexible ways of thinking about math with direct relevance to their own tasks. These supplies will continue to be used for counting collections with my kindergarteners this year and for many years to come! Thank you for your generosity and impact on my students and future classes.","fullyFundedDate":1757905075620,"projectUrl":"project/from-coins-to-creatures-inspiring-probl/9712766/","projectTitle":"From Coins to Creatures: Inspiring Problem Solvers with Counting Collections","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kaneshiro","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8027386_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1740880221279","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8027386"},{"teacherId":8027386,"projectId":9686469,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generosity in helping fund this project. My students were beyond excited to use all the new items during our unit on how citizens contribute to communities in many ways. As we learned about the various community helpers, their places of work, and the other places around our communities, we were better prepared for our culminating project. The students used all of the supplies from this DonorsChoose project to create an entire community as they worked in partners or small groups to build a section of the community. The end result was amazing! They were extremely proud of their creations and were able to describe in detail their portion of the community and its importance as well as which community helpers work or live in that area of the community. \r\n\r\nThis hands-on experience helped the students gain a greater appreciation for the many components of a community and how THEY can contribute to their own communities. Many students went home and built their own little communities for their toys and stuffed animals. Your contribution led to greater results than within the confines of the classroom. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a positive influence on my young learners. Due to your generosity my students are off to a great start. The colored folders help us keep track of our work. All colored post-its are helping students keep track of what they are reading in our chapter books. They are able to jot down what is happening in that chapter to help them remember what the whole book is about by the time they reach the end. We also use post-its for students to write down what they are learning about in class so they can share with other students. Other school supplies donated were colored index cards and scratch pads to solve problems, write down ideas, and organize our writing. Students are also using the pens to correct and edit their assignments in class. Our new styluses have been helpful for students to use on their iPads to complete assignments in class.
