When students first received the measuring tapes, they were excited to finally \"do real math\" outside of their notebooks. We immediately put them to use measuring objects around campus, such as flagpoles, walls, and trees. One memorable lesson involved students measuring shadows and nearby objects to indirectly calculate the height of much taller structures. Students worked together, recorded their measurements, and discussed strategies, making the math both engaging and meaningful.\r\n\r\nThese materials have allowed me to move beyond abstract examples and give students authentic opportunities to apply geometric reasoning. Students were more invested because they gathered the data themselves and could clearly see how geometry is used in the real world. Many students expressed surprise at how accurate their calculations were, which boosted their confidence and deepened their understanding of similar triangles and proportional reasoning.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue using the measuring tapes for real-world projects involving indirect measurement, scale drawings, and problem-solving challenges. They will analyze accuracy, compare methods, and reflect on how geometry applies to careers such as engineering, construction, and architecture. Because of you, my students now have access to Marble Run games that have already made a powerful impact. When the materials arrived, students were immediately excited and curious. Many gathered around, eager to touch the pieces and start building. That excitement quickly turned into meaningful collaboration as students worked together to design, test, and improve their marble runs. I've seen students who were once hesitant to speak now sharing ideas, negotiating roles, and encouraging their peers.\r\n\r\nWe use the Marble Run games during STEM-focused group activities, where students must work together to solve challenges such as designing a run that moves the marble the farthest or includes specific features. These activities naturally promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. One memorable moment was watching a group struggle at first, then succeed after listening to each other's ideas and revising their design together. These moments show tremendous growth in both social-emotional learning and collaboration skills, especially for students who missed out on social interactions during COVID.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue using the Marble Runs to explore more complex STEM concepts like motion, gravity, and cause-and-effect, while strengthening their collaboration skills. They will reflect on what worked, what didn't, and how teamwork helped them succeed. Your investment is more than just a financial contribution; it is a direct bridge to independence for the nearly 500 students at Westwood who receive special education services. By funding this pathway, you are helping us tackle a stark reality—the fact that individuals with disabilities face unemployment rates nearly double those of their non-disabled peers. With your help, we are changing that narrative for our students.\r\n\r\nWith these funds, we are moving forward immediately with several key initiatives:\r\nThe Learning Labs: We are hard at work transforming designated campus spaces into simulated workplace environments. These labs will allow students to master skills in food service, clerical support, and basic trades in a safe, supportive setting.\r\nEssential Supplies: From adaptive equipment to task-analysis tools, your support ensures that students across the entire spectrum—including those with Autism, emotional disabilities, and intellectual disabilities—have the accessibility they need to succeed.\r\nCampus Integration: This grant allows us to deepen our partnership with the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. This not only provides our students with professional tools but fosters a mentorship culture where CTE students and \"Working Warriors\" learn and grow together.\r\nThe Impact of Your Support\r\n\r\nBecause of your partnership, our students will graduate with more than just a diploma; they will leave with a portfolio of real-world competencies and the confidence to navigate the workforce. You are helping us build a program where every student, regardless of their starting point, has a clear pathway to a meaningful career and an empowered life.\r\nWe would love to invite you to visit Westwood once our Learning Labs are up and running so you can see the Working Warriors in action.
