Think back to the last time you were "sent to the principal's office". What was your mindset? Were you ready to have a clear-headed discussion about the consequences of your choices? Were you relaxed and ready for the conversation ahead? What if you were greeted with the choice of coloring pages, sensory items, or even two minutes with boxing gloves and a standing punching bag (already purchased)? Our students need a minute or two to collect themselves and this will help them clear their minds while they do. When we successfully allow our students to center themselves, the experience in the principal's office can be shifted from simply doling out consequences to be authentic learning experiences. Only then can we hope to meet students where they are and help them to make better choices in the future! These stations will also be available for students for self-select time in our room. It will also be available for other support staff to use with students.
