These students bring resilience, determination, and so much heart into the room every single day. My goal with this project was to give them more than just access to books and dictionaries. I wanted to give them a voice in the classroom and the confidence to use it.\r\n\r\nThanks to this project, for the first time in the past three years, I have seen a noticeable increase in EB students not only meeting their language goals but actively participating in classroom discussions. It is not that they were not capable before, they just did not always have access to the materials they needed to engage deeply with our anchor texts and content. Having Spanish editions of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, The House on Mango Street, and I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter has been a complete game-changer. Students are able to follow along, make meaning in their own language, and then share insights with their peers in English. They feel more confident because they understand the content and know they belong in the conversation.\r\n\r\nThe bilingual dictionaries and picture dictionaries have become daily tools. Students use them independently to clarify vocabulary during class and while completing assignments. This real-time support has built a stronger bridge between their native language and English development. I also now have access to high-quality Teacher Pay Teachers resources specifically designed for ELLs. These include scaffolded activities and visual supports that allow students to practice academic skills in ways that meet their needs and learning styles.\r\n\r\nBecause of this project, I have watched students go from quietly unsure to proudly engaged. They ask more questions. They raise their hands more often. They participate in partner reading and group activities with greater ease. They are no longer on the outside of learning looking in. They are right in the middle of it, thriving. Thank you for helping me create a classroom where language is not a barrier but a bridge, and where every student feels seen, supported, and celebrated.","fullyFundedDate":1756088718214,"projectUrl":"project/bridging-languages-in-literature/9511453/","projectTitle":"Bridging Languages in Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ward","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9024583_orig.png?crop=1242,1242,x0,y8&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683662702583","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mswards-kiddos-classroom"},{"teacherId":9024583,"projectId":9263755,"letterContent":"The heart of \"Heart and Mind: Journey and Tools to Self-Discovery\" is to help students feel seen, supported, and in control of their own growth. My goal with this project was to create a learning space where students could build both academic confidence and emotional strength. With your support, we were able to provide students with meaningful tools like wobble chairs, pop fidgets, highlighters, fresh markers, and creative project supplies that made our classroom come alive.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest highlights has been watching students use their goal folders and dry erase boards to reflect on their progress and hold themselves accountable. I was able to create over 30 anchor charts and even get them laminated so they can be used year after year. These anchor charts have become part of our daily routine and helped guide both academic and emotional conversations. Students also use our calm-down corner filled with emotional support plushies like our class favorite, the Emotional Support Fries. It may seem like a small detail, but those soft little toys bring huge comfort when emotions run high during testing or tough days.\r\n\r\nThis project has also brought joy and identity into the classroom. Students love decorating their Chromebooks, notebooks, and water bottles with stickers. That simple freedom to make their space their own has led to a stronger sense of belonging. Snacks have also been a huge success. Having healthy treats on hand has helped students stay focused, especially during long days or after tough mornings. A simple snack really does go a long way.\r\n\r\nMost of all, what makes this project so special is how it honors the resilience my students bring with them each day. They face challenges outside of school that we may never fully see, but inside this room, they have the tools and care they need to succeed. From the bean bag reading corner to the group work with dry erase boards, to the smiles when someone gets to choose a sticker or a fidget, everything in this space helps them feel like they matter.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us create a classroom that supports both heart and mind. With your help, we have been able to stock our classroom with items like a Swiffer WetJet, Clorox wipes, Kleenex tissues, mini first aid kits, air fresheners, and hand sanitizer to keep our space fresh, safe, and ready for learning.\r\n\r\nThese supplies are not just about staying germ free, they are about creating a space where students feel proud, comfortable, and focused. We work together as a class to keep things clean. Students take turns wiping down desks, sweeping with the WetJet, and making sure our tissue stations and sanitizer bottles are stocked. The pride they take in these routines has been amazing to witness. When students help care for their space, they feel connected to it. That builds ownership, respect, and a strong sense of community.\r\n\r\nThe biggest impact has been during this flu season. As students started missing school from illness, we had everything we needed to keep things sanitized and safe. We wiped down every desk and high touch surface daily, kept noses clean with plenty of tissues, and used sanitizer constantly. Because of that, we were able to reduce the spread and keep our learning going. The classroom smells fresh, looks great, and students genuinely want to help maintain it.\r\n\r\nClassroom jobs are a huge hit. Every week, students compete for roles like floor sweeper, desk wipe leader, and scent captain. It has improved organization and cleanliness while giving students purpose. Your support helped us make a simple but powerful shift in our classroom culture. Our students feel cared for, and in return, they care more about the space and each other.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us sanitize for success. What I love most about them is their genuine excitement when I introduce a new book. Their faces light up when I pull a book from the shelf and say, \"This one changed my life in middle school.\" That moment when they make a personal connection with a story or character is something truly special.\r\n\r\nWe are slowly building a diverse classroom library filled with stories that reflect my students' interests and identities. They read during our independent time, after finishing assignments, and even during testing recovery days. I encourage them to check out books and complete sketch summaries with personal reflections so they can recommend their favorites to peers. This simple routine has built a reading culture in my classroom that is driven by student voice and connection.\r\n\r\nI carefully selected the books in this project because many of them meant a lot to me when I was their age. My absolute favorite series growing up was The Clique Series. I could never afford the full collection, so I only read what the school library had. To now be in a position to offer my students the full set of books I dreamed about owning brings things full circle for me. Some other popular books I've added are A Series of Unfortunate Events, Percy Jackson, I Survived, and newer hits like Red Queen, Scythe, and Raina Telgemeier's graphic novels. These stories build imagination, empathy, and emotional intelligence, and my students are hungry for more.\r\n\r\nSharing those personal connections has had the biggest impact. It is heartwarming to see students gravitate toward the same stories that made me fall in love with reading. These books don't just improve comprehension and vocabulary, they support social emotional learning too. Literature teaches us how to navigate feelings, think critically, and understand others.\r\n\r\nEach time a student walks up and says, \"Miss Ward, I finished this book in two days. What should I read next?\" I know this project is doing exactly what it's meant to. Your support helps make that possible. It means students get to escape into magical worlds, meet characters who look and talk like them, and experience the joy of finishing a story they didn't want to put down.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping ignite that spark.","fullyFundedDate":1750917456680,"projectUrl":"project/books-ignite-minds-fueling-a-love-for-r/9357350/","projectTitle":"Books Ignite Minds: Fueling a Love for Reading!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ward","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9024583_orig.png?crop=1242,1242,x0,y8&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683662702583","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mswards-kiddos-classroom"},{"teacherId":9024583,"projectId":9459507,"letterContent":"The heart of \"Colorful Kudos & Classroom Care\" is to build a classroom where students feel seen, celebrated, and motivated to take ownership of their learning. This year, I've witnessed what happens when students are not only recognized for their achievements, but also given the tools and encouragement to keep going. My classroom has transformed. Students walk in ready to give their best, and I truly believe this project has played a major role in that.\r\n\r\nOur school has limited access to color printing, and teachers often have to ask permission or pay out of pocket. Thanks to this project, I've been able to print vibrant student data walls, colorful certificates, and positive notes home without jumping through hoops. These printed pieces are more than paper, they are proof that someone is proud of them. Students now check our data wall and celebrate each other's progress. Over 70 percent of my students have shown academic growth this year, and that momentum has a lot to do with the way they're being celebrated and supported in this space.\r\n\r\nBut the impact goes even deeper. Every Friday, students receive recognition, not just for grades but for classroom leadership. I've assigned 9 students per class specific jobs to help the classroom run smoothly. They've stepped up with pride, knowing they're contributing to our success. Because of that, cleanliness, organization, and classroom flow have improved. Students now help one another reach goals, and the sense of community has grown stronger. The snacks, fidgets, birthday cards, and colorful stickers help create a space where students feel at home, motivated, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nThis project has lifted a heavy burden off my shoulders and reminded me that little things, a printed certificate, a Friday reward, a simple sticker, can spark big changes. The gift of translators and Spanish independent reading books has helped achieve that. When I had a Spanish speaking adult give one of my students the translator to explain how to use it, he said, \"I can talk to her now?!\" He was so excited!\r\n\r\nFurthermore, students all have the opportunity to read books in Spanish for the first 15 minutes of my class. Because of you, recess at YES Prep West has become one of the most joyful, energetic, and community-building moments of the entire school day. More than 80% of our students are now fully engaged and active during recess running, playing, laughing, connecting and it's all because they finally have the materials and space to do so.\r\n\r\nThe first day they saw the wagon and all the sports equipment, you would've thought it was a holiday. Students sprinted toward the volleyballs, lined up to test the flag football belts, grabbed soccer balls, and instantly turned the blacktop into their own little world of play. Even our typically quieter students and those in our special populations started joining in blowing bubbles, learning double Dutch, chalk painting beautiful sidewalk art, teaming up for volleyball... I had never seen joy at this magnitude. The wagon has been a game-changer too; it makes it so easy to transport everything outside, and the kids love helping load and unload.\r\n\r\nThese resources haven't just helped my class hey've been shared across all of middle school, serving over 350 students daily. And let's just say... the high schoolers are definitely jealous of our setup! One of my favorite moments was watching students challenge their 7th grade teachers to a volleyball match using the new portable net something they now look forward to every quarter. The entire campus feels more connected, more active, and more excited because of what you've made possible.\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just provide equipment; it opened doors. Students who once stayed on the sidelines are now jumping rope with friends. Students who used to walk alone now chase bubbles with partners. Students who rarely spoke up now organize mini-games and teach others new skills. You helped build confidence, community, and belonging.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we plan to continue using this equipment to teach teamwork, healthy habits, communication, and leadership. The students are already planning new recess tournaments and more grade-level teacher-versus-student challenges. Their excitement is real, and the opportunities ahead are endless.\r\n\r\nThank you for changing the lives of our amazing kiddos.
