My school is only in its second year of conception. Even though there are some wonderful and amazing things happening there, it is still missing many resources that other schools may have. One such example: a library. My school does not yet have a library. As such, it is my responsibility to provide my students with books that they can read during class time and at home.
I believe that fostering a love for reading can be transformative. I've seen it happen; students have started my class on a 3rd grade reading level and left it on a 6th. This happened, in large part, because I was able to put books in their hands that they wanted to read. That is my goal for this year: to provide my students with books that they WANT to read.
Every day, my class begins with 15 minutes of silent, sustained reading. I MUST be able to provide my students with books that will lead them to success during this time. In order to achieve this, I recently surveyed all my students about their book preferences. The books I have chosen for this project reflect their answers. Providing them with their preferred books will help improve their reading fluency and comprehension, which will serve them throughout their 7th grade year and beyond. As one student put on her survey, "you can't get anywhere if you can't read." I want my students to be able to get wherever they want.
