My project included the Lakeshore Look & Discover First Science Kit - Includes Plastic Telescope, Removable Tripod, Binoculars, and Microscope; the Three Little Pigs Problem Solving STEM Kit and Kaplan Early Learning STEM Builder Series Build a Waterway. These kits are supplements to several of the themes that I teach in my class. My students were super excited when they saw the new materials for S(cience)T(echnology)E(engineering)A(rt)M(athematics). All of the items were used for STEAM specifically, but aligned with Literacy skills and activities as well. \r\n\r\nWe used the problem-solving kit to engage further with our book about the three little pigs. They had fun building with new and different materials. They added details or their own endings to the story. They used different words and expressions for the characters. My students were able to re-enact the story and explore different endings. They role-played, engaged with and compared/contrasted their houses and stories!\r\n\r\nWe used the telescope, binoculars and microscope to explore inside the classroom and on our playground. Students talked about the insects they saw on the ground and objects they saw in the sky. They examined small objects in the our science center. They talked to each other about what they could do with each tool.\r\n\r\nWe are going to build our waterway when the weather gets warmer. The waterway kit will be an exciting addition to our outside water play. I can't wait for my students to help me build it then add water!\r\n\r\nWe are currently working on Theme 8: Week 4 about birds. Our project this week is building a bird nest. We are using materials, such as plastic eggs, a paper bag, twigs and grass/feathers and glue. During small group time, students use the wooden tracing tools to practice correct letter formation, and many are now able to work independently with greater confidence. The pencil grips have been especially helpful for students who struggle with holding a pencil, supporting their fine motor development and helping them write more comfortably and correctly.\r\n\r\nIt has also been wonderful to see students choosing the alphabet maze toy during their free time. They are excited to explore letters on their own, building letter recognition in a fun and meaningful way. In addition, the alphabet books have become a favorite during small group activities, as students enjoy reading and learning letters and their sounds.\r\n\r\nYour support has helped create a classroom environment where students can grow, explore, and develop essential literacy skills.
