Integrating this hands-on project into our life science unit completely elevated their learning experience; instead of just reading about nutrient cycles and plant life stages in a textbook, my students directly nourished the soil and tended to their own growing plants daily. For reluctant readers, graphic novels and engaging activities can provide an inviting entry point into literacy and help them discover that reading can be enjoyable and meaningful.\r\n\r\nStudents will use Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes to explore courage, hope, perseverance, kindness, history, and culture while creating origami cranes connected to the story. Animorphs will encourage students to think about transformation, identity, character traits, and the relationship between humans and animals as they create animal-inspired bead art. Through The Baby-Sitters Club, students will examine friendship, teamwork, problem-solving, and relationships while creating friendship bracelets together.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these resources will help create a classroom where reading is something students experience, discuss, create, and share. The children have begun learning how to ride the trikes, which a lot don't have access to that at home. With the stepping blocks, the children are able to go across them at their developmental level with some jumping, crawling, or walking across. This helps with their balance and coordination as well as color recognition. The spinning chair and rocking chair have been SO crucial to the successful learning of the children. They are able to go outside and sit in the chair while enjoying the weather and using their legs to move themselves up and down. Some of my children need to build their core muscles to help them with writing, sitting, walking, etc. and the spinning chair is able to help with all of that.
