Another big hit in our classroom is using our new playdough letter stampers to spell our tricky words. We are getting ready to tackle new reading skills such as multi-syllable words, and when we do I know the students will be so excited to see that I have new centers from this project to pull out and use for that skill. These boards encourage creativity and repeated practice in a way that feels like play.\r\n\r\nOur phonics and word-building centers have been strengthened by materials like the Snap & Match and Snap & Build sets and Roll & Read games. First graders are actively exploring vowel sounds, blends, digraphs, syllables, and ending sounds by manipulating pieces, solving challenges, and learning through trial and error. These playful experiences help solidify foundational reading skills in a developmentally appropriate way.\r\n\r\nThe sight-word games, especially Splash! Reading Games and Fishing for Sight-Words, have transformed sight-word practice into an exciting, high-interest activity. Students participate in daily silent reading, engage in small-group book clubs, and take part in whole-class reads. During these times, we focus on identifying story elements such as characters, setting, problem, and solution, while also practicing close reading skills like citing evidence from the text. Our whole-class novels allow us to pause and discuss key moments together, while book clubs encourage students to collaborate, share ideas, and take ownership of their learning. These experiences also support writing activities, including responses to reading, summaries, and character reflections.\r\n\r\nThe books you donated have been especially impactful in helping students build important literacy skills. The Wild Robot has sparked thoughtful discussions about character development, theme, and how characters change over time, as well as lessons on empathy and survival. Because of Winn-Dixie has helped students analyze relationships, make text-to-self connections, and explore how setting influences a story. Students are learning how to describe characters using evidence and explain how events contribute to the overall message of the text.\r\n\r\nThrough texts like Frindle, students are also developing higher-level thinking skills such as understanding cause and effect, exploring point of view, and analyzing how language can influence others. These books have encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and meaningful conversations about problem-solving and perseverance. We are excited to continue using these novels in book clubs and whole-class instruction to strengthen comprehension, writing, and analytical skills, and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to enrich our classroom reading experience with these engaging texts.","fullyFundedDate":1760463823296,"projectUrl":"project/3rd-grade-literacy/9826000/","projectTitle":"3rd grade literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Thomas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10311138"},{"teacherId":2863478,"projectId":9827157,"letterContent":"\"Encouraging Learning Through Materials and Sensory Tools\" was a such a great addition to our classroom; thank you for making this project possible. I am incredibly grateful for your generosity and for the meaningful impact these resources have already had on my first graders. \r\nOver the past month, my students have been actively using many of the materials you provided, and their excitement has been contagious. When the Double-Sided Magnetic Write & Wipe Mini Boards were introduced during our CK Skills phonics lessons, students cheered. They eagerly practiced spelling words and participated in spelling chains, fully engaged in applying phonics skills in a hands-on way. \r\nThe Roll & Read games have had a wonderful impact on both literacy and social skills. As students played, I observed them helping one another spell words, offering encouragement, and working cooperatively. These moments of teamwork have been especially meaningful during literacy centers, where students are becoming increasingly independent while learning how to support their peers.\r\nOne of the biggest successes has been the Fishing for Sight Words game. The added movement and novelty of the fishing poles immediately boosted engagement, and I saw noticeable progress in students' sight word fluency. This game has quickly become a favorite free-choice activity. Adding a fish-shaped recording sheet to write the word \"caught\" also provided an extra layer of practice and accountability, reinforcing their learning in a fun and memorable way.\r\nThe Splash! reading games have been a perfect fit for our classroom routines, especially during dismissal. Some students wait in the classroom for extended periods while buses are being called, and these games give them purposeful, engaging reading practice right up until the end of the day. It has been wonderful to see students choose to read and play together while continuing to build decoding skills.\r\nThese materials have been especially impactful for my emerging readers receiving MTSS support. The games make learning feel approachable and fun, helping students build confidence while practicing essential skills. I have also appreciated how easy the materials are to set up and how naturally they allow for differentiation, ensuring that every student is appropriately challenged and supported.\r\nSome items will be introduced later in the year as our curriculum progresses. Introducing new materials gradually will help maintain student excitement and ensure each resource is used purposefully and effectively when it best matches our learning goals.\r\nThank you for believing in my students and investing in their growth as readers. Your generosity has increased student engagement, fostered independence and cooperation, and helped create joyful, meaningful literacy experiences in our classroom. We are anxious to use the other sets of puppets to retell other classic stories like Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs. \r\n\r\nThe Rhyming House Game was a huge hit! The students have asked to play the game over and over. They love that it is self checking.
