Because of your generosity, my students were able to explore sea level rise through hands-on experiments instead of just reading about it.\r\n\r\nStudents built their own islands out of modeling clay, filled the containers with water, placed ice on the islands, and used heat lamps to simulate rising temperatures. They watched the effects unfold in real time and discussed how melting land ice contributes to sea level rise. We followed that with another experiment that showed how warming water expands, helping students understand another major cause of rising sea levels.\r\n\r\nThese investigations sparked meaningful conversations about climate change and what it means for us here in Hawaiʻi. Students made connections between the science they observed and the future of our own coastlines, communities, and way of life. Seeing these concepts firsthand made the learning much more impactful than a textbook ever could.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping create experiences that make science engaging, relevant, and memorable. They also really helped with end of the year studying and test taking. Several students had teachers in elementary school that would give them peppermints for focus and they really enjoyed that continuity in their education. \r\n The vacuum has been a great tool for keeping the classroom clean and avoiding lots of dirt and dust and allergies. Many volunteered to help open, store or put away. They especially enjoyed the snacks provided from my Donors Choose project. Even more than that, many students in my classes have anxiety and ADHD which means they need to manage behaviors associated with these diagnoses. I included in my project magnetic building sets as well as a few fidget spinners. The students always ask for the building magnet tiles when they need to take a break from academics for a limited period. Two students in particular claimed that the fidget spinners I ordered were the best ones they have ever used. I gifted the spinners to the students who used them consistently in class. \r\n\r\nI also ordered stationery pouches for the students to use during the school year and after they graduate. The girls especially liked them. \r\n\r\nThe most useful classroom additions from this project are mouse pads and mouses that we can use with our school issued chrome books. These are a great asset to my class inventory because when students need to drag images on the computer, the mouse is more convenient.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of my current students and those who will join my classes next year and beyond, we all thank you for providing donations to enrich our classrooms! Without your generosity, we would definitely have less inventory!! Presentation day was scheduled for Friday March 13th, but all state and county offices were shut down. Thankfully we were approved to reschedule our complex wide wavier day so that presentations could be held on March 30th instead. \r\nAll of the items purchased through donors choose were still be able to be used and were very helpful in keeping the day organized. Crates of supplies including large display clocks were distributed to 22 classrooms. The cafeteria staff was able to freeze purchased ingredients and bento containers and serving boats were used to provide judges breakfast and lunch. Snacks were served to judges, student volunteers and presenters through out the day. \r\n392 judges came on campus to watch 250 students who successfully presented a 10-12 minute presentation.
