My seventh graders finally got to dive into the geology portion of our schoolwide civilization project, and the new materials changed everything. The first day I brought out the rock samples and the acetic acid, the kids lit up. They were so excited to actually test real rocks instead of just reading about them. One of my students held up a sample and said, \"Wait, we get to do real science today\" and the rest of the room basically exploded with questions before I even finished giving directions.\r\n\r\nWe have been using the materials to run weathering and erosion investigations. Students have been observing how different rocks react to water and vinegar, measuring changes, arguing about which rocks would survive the longest, and defending their choices with real evidence. The research journals you funded have become their little science diaries, filled with sketches, tables, and notes about how these results will impact the building plans for their civilizations. Watching them make the connection between geology and how ancient societies actually survived has been such a cool moment as a teacher.\r\n\r\nNext, students will take everything they learned from these experiments and apply it to their final civilization designs. They will be choosing their building materials, defending their engineering decisions, and explaining how their society will stand the test of time. Your support gave them the tools they needed to think like real scientists and builders, and it has made this project more hands on and meaningful than I ever imagined. Thank you for giving my students this experience.","fullyFundedDate":1757520314045,"projectUrl":"project/which-rock-lasts-longer-hands-on-weathe/9685339/","projectTitle":"Which Rock Lasts Longer? It was not what they expected to see in science class! Once we started the activity, they quickly realized that these simple materials were powerful tools for understanding how Earth's plates move. Working in teams, they used the crackers to model plate boundaries, pressing them together to form mountains, pulling them apart to create mid-ocean ridges, and sliding them past each other to simulate earthquakes.\r\n\r\nAs students moved their plates through the icing mantle, they began connecting what they saw to real landforms and hazards on Earth. They could clearly explain how volcanoes form at convergent boundaries and why earthquakes happen along transform faults. It was amazing to watch those lightbulb moments as they made sense of these complex processes through hands-on modeling.\r\n\r\nThe energy in the room drew attention from across the hall. Teachers from the math department even stopped by to watch. They were in awe of how engaged the students were and how such a simple setup could lead to such deep understanding and excitement for learning.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students now have a strong foundation in plate motion that will support their understanding in our next unit on rock transformations. They are already making predictions about how different rock types form depending on the environments created by these boundaries. A HUGE thankyou for all you have done for my Vet Tech kiddos to support them on their trip. From the moment they were on the bus heading out, many things were new and exciting. For most of these students, it was the first trip away from home, first time away from parents and having a true sense of the world past their doorsteps. With that came some fear and apprehension of the unknown and being away from the people and things they are comfortable with. \r\nAs students got onto the bus they were given backpacks with matching shirts, one for each day of the trip, all made special with logos created by a student. A sense of unity and togetherness, a family away from home came over the group. Even the students who tend to shy away from others were brought together. From the adult point of view, you helped to make it much easier to keep track of all of our students, which increased the safety. The students thought the shirts were cool, but we loved the the added viability. Thank you for helping to make this trip one to remember! The investigative skills and knowledge they have gained from your support form a strong foundation for this next unit.
