My third-period students helped me set up the games and shared which ones they liked playing. Uno is a big favorite, while The Uzzle is a game they had never played before.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened just the other week. We had an early dismissal, and students asked if they could play the games. It was so encouraging to see students asking others to play with them. I was especially happy to see different students playing games with classmates they do not usually talk to. I knew the games would naturally give students opportunities to practice English, but it has been a bonus to see the games helping build a classroom culture where everyone feels included. The games are creating opportunities for students to interact with classmates they might not otherwise talk to, and that has been incredible to see!\r\n\r\nI plan to continue incorporating the games into our language activities. We will use them to practice speaking and listening skills and to practice using academic and conversational vocabulary. Students were able to observe both plant and animal cells, and later, onion cells during our investigation of mitosis. Seeing cell structures and cell division up close helped bring their learning to life and made abstract concepts much more concrete.\r\n\r\nNow, we are building on that knowledge as we begin our study of meiosis. Because students have already seen what happens to chromosomes during mitosis, they are better able to visualize and understand the steps of meiosis. Soon, we will move into genetics, where students will explore how sex cells receive only one set of chromosomes and how this leads to different gene combinations.
