I am requesting a copy of Elizabeth Acevedo's The Poet X for each of my English 11 students. While they can get loaner copies from the school and library, students deserve the privilege of highlighting and note-taking in their own copy of the text. For a small price, we can give students what they want - a physical copy of the book - with the added benefit of possessing a text they can re-read and reflect upon in the future. We will be reading this text in our class and studying how Acevedo uses the form of poetry to tell the story of a teenage girl coping with life and whose identify and issues mirror many of my students. Because so many students are around the poverty line, they generally can't afford to buy or order their own copies. We can help them with that. Additionally, this will help with COVID-19 protocols so books do not have to sit in quarantine after students use them.
