My students have mild to moderate learning disabilities ranging from Specific Learning Disabilities to Autism. They are reading at first through 6th grade reading levels and for the most part do not have academic support at home. More 50% of the families in the school are below the poverty line and the school is close to 50% ESL. They are hard workers, but because we are in a more urban area, we do not have many of the resources that other schools do--including modified books for students at lower reading levels, or in some cases, any books at all. Yet, these students are still required to master the same standards as the rest of the State of Maryland with fewer resources or books that are not appropriate to their reading level. Sadly, there is no extra money to buy books for students who have different learning needs than the majority of the population.
