These books also introduce important lessons like storytelling structure, making predictions, and building vocabulary, all in a fun and accessible way that keeps students excited about learning.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active, joyful, and collaborative. You might see us gathered on the carpet for a read-aloud, laughing at a silly rhyme, or pausing to ask questions and make connections. Students practice turning and talking with partners, pointing out sight words, and even retelling stories in their own words. We also encourage students to take books home, where reading continues with their families, helping build consistency and confidence outside of school.\r\n\r\nSome of our students, especially those who are just beginning their reading journey, have shown incredible excitement with these new books. For many, this is the first time they've had books of their own to take home, and that sense of ownership is powerful. Students who were once hesitant are now eager to participate, flipping through pages, recognizing familiar words, and proudly sharing stories with their peers. For most of my students coming into first grade and not knowing most of their letters and sounds reading was very intimidating and frustrating. Now after 61 days of school these struggling readers can read decodable texts! Their motivation in reading has improved since receiving these engaging decodable texts because they are colorful and fun to read. These texts reinforce the patterns taught in class and use them in cute stories. \r\nMy target group of 10 students who were performing below the AIMS web benchmark at the beginning of the year have improved their reading fluency to a median of 10 words per minute. We started the year at a median of 3 words a minute with most of those students not being able to recognize the letters. Now I have some reading as high as 16, 17, 24 and 28 words per minute. These students started the year around 4-7 words per minute. These materials have been a highly successful resource tool for our students and they frequently ask for more to use in the classroom. Sometimes students get stuck when they have strong emotions and these journals and sketchbooks have helped supports students to self regulate by drawing and being able to express themselves creatively when words do not come to them easily.
