Over the course of the year, I've been able to persuade my sixth graders that reading fiction is exciting and valuable. In the past 8 months they've transformed from apathetic readers to avid consumers of everything from epic fantasy adventures to dystopian societies to dramatic romances. They've read more this year than they've read in their entire lives and have made tremendous growth as a result. Something is still missing, though . . .
Without nonfiction books in my classroom, my kids are still convinced that reading informational text is lame, boring, and useless. Moreover, their nonfiction skills and academic vocabulary skills are progressing slower than I'd like. Introducing my students to these engaging nonfiction books will prompt the next stage in their reading revolution! They'll be introduced to a whole new world of information and pick up valuable skills along the way.
If we are lucky enough to receive them, these books will be placed in our classroom library for all 53 of my students to page through, bring home, and fall in love with!
