My students were able to access important historical information and practice their literacy in their new language in an accessible way through the graphic novel format, and I used it to build a comprehensive unit that included listening, reading, writing, and speaking opportunities. It was rewarding to me to see the interest my students had in learning the story that George Takei shares and in exploring that part of the country's history, and I was impressed by the questions that the book sparked and the writing they created and the discussions they participated in as a result of what they learned from the book. We also compared the story to another account of the interment camps from a Scholastic Action article, as you can see in the attached photos, which did even more to support their literacy and language development.
