This fall, as my students settle back into routines, I am watching many of them struggle to sit still and stay focused. For nearly half of my students from low-income households, that struggle often carries what is happening at home into the classroom.\r\n\r\nThe tools you funded are already changing how my classroom runs. When I ask a question now, students pick up a dry erase board and show me their thinking. That means quieter kids get a voice, and I can see in seconds who has grasped a concept and who needs more support. The highlighters have become part of how my students read and study, teaching them to pull out what matters most, a skill they will carry well past third grade.\r\n\r\nFor students who need to move their hands or calm their bodies to think clearly, calm strips, worry stones, spiky rings, and stress cubes offer a way to do so quietly and stay focused on schoolwork.\r\n\r\nEach child finds the focus tool that works for them. Some students reach for the wrist timer because a quiet vibration reminds them to return to work. Another just needs a stress cube in her hand while she listens. Watching them figure out what helps them focus, and choosing it for themselves, is teaching them something no worksheet can. Because of you, my students come to school each day with what it takes to feel calm and ready to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1784566327832,"projectUrl":"project/focus-tools-supporting-student-engagem/10371075/","projectTitle":"Focus Tools – Supporting Student Engagement","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Galecki","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/galecki"},{"teacherId":7792986,"projectId":6142891,"letterContent":"Dear Donors,\r\n\r\nThank you so much for helping bring a new document camera into our classroom. Our school building was built in the 1970s, and much of the classroom technology was older and limited. Having a high-quality document camera made an incredible difference in the way I was able to teach and in the way my students were able to access lessons.\r\n\r\nThe biggest impact was in modeling. I could place a worksheet, book, student example, math problem, or writing sample under the camera and work through it with students in real time. Students could clearly see each step, watch my thinking process, and follow along as we solved problems, annotated text, or revised writing together. It made instruction much more visual and helped students understand not just what to do, but how to do it.\r\n\r\nThis tool quickly became something we used every day. It made lessons clearer, allowed us to celebrate and learn from student work, and helped create a more interactive classroom. Your donation of calming tools, fidgets, sensory materials, and snacks has made a meaningful difference in the daily lives of our students.\r\nThe calming light has quickly become a favorite tool for mindful breathing. Students are naturally drawn to it, and it gives them a concrete, visual way to slow down their breathing and regulate their emotions. I often see shoulders relax and frustrated expressions soften as they focus on the gentle rhythm of the light.\r\nThe fidgets and Etch A Sketch provide students with safe, appropriate ways to channel nervous energy and improve focus. These tools allow students to keep their hands busy while their minds settle. The cloud and rainbow regulation tool has been especially powerful — students love the hands-on experience of moving the colored ball into the correct ray or back into the cloud as they identify and manage their feelings. It makes emotional regulation both engaging and accessible.\r\nPerhaps most importantly, the snacks you provided are meeting a critical need in our building. Many of our students come to school hungry or experience food insecurity. When a child is hungry, it is incredibly difficult for them to concentrate, regulate emotions, or engage in learning. Having snacks readily available allows us to meet their basic needs first, so they can return to class feeling focused, calm, and ready to learn. Sometimes, a simple snack communicates care, safety, and stability in ways words cannot.\r\nBecause of you, our skills room continues to be a space that feels peaceful, safe, and supportive. Before your donation, the bright orange cabinets made the room feel visually overwhelming for many students.
