All children have an innate desire to learn and to be successful in all areas of their lives. Unfortunately, the pandemic has disrupted many facets of life and one of the hardest hit populations is elementary students. Students' sense of structure and stability has been disrupted and they only hear and understand enough to be worried or angry without understanding how to manage the uncomfortable feelings that they are experiencing.
Dedicated, deliberate spaces where students can take a minute to refocus, along with weekly lessons addressing social and emotional wellbeing are essential to helping our students cope with the challenges of this time. Items I have selected reflect many components necessary to establish a refocus room in my 2 schools. Selected stories will also help me as a counselor as I proactively teach students how to manage their social and emotional needs in an easy-to-understand way through literature. As students learn to manage their emotions, they will be able to focus on their academics enabling them to succeed in the classroom as well as in life.
