First grade requires young students to spend a significant amount of time listening, focusing, following directions, and managing their bodies and emotions. For six- and seven-year-olds, this can be challenging. The materials provided through this project have given my students appropriate ways to take a break, regulate their bodies and minds, and then return to classroom instruction better prepared to focus and learn.\r\n\r\nOne of the most important things I have seen is that sometimes a student who appears distracted or unable to complete a task does not necessarily need more academic instruction. Instead, that student may simply need an opportunity to move, reset, or regulate before being asked to focus again. These materials have allowed me to recognize and respond to those needs in a positive way. Rather than expecting a child to continue struggling to sit and focus when their body is telling them they need a break, I can provide an appropriate regulation opportunity and then help them transition back into learning.\r\n\r\nThese breaks have become an important tool for helping students learn how to recognize what their own bodies and minds need. At this age, students are still developing self-awareness and self-regulation skills. They do not always know why they are feeling restless, overwhelmed, frustrated, or distracted. Providing structured opportunities for mind and body regulation helps them begin to understand those feelings and learn healthy ways to respond to them. Having new, engaging equipment has allowed us to create more activities where every student can participate, stay active, and build confidence.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw all of the new materials, they were so excited! They could not wait to touch and try everything. Their excitement made it clear how meaningful it was for them to have equipment that was new, inviting, and designed to help them learn through movement. One special moment was watching students encourage one another as they tried new activities. Students who were sometimes hesitant to participate became more willing to join in because the new equipment made the activities fun and approachable.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building on these skills through cooperative games, movement challenges, and team activities. We will be using the equipment to help students develop stronger coordination and motor skills while also learning important lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and encouraging others. The story also gave us opportunities to have meaningful discussions about belonging, friendship, kindness, perseverance, and what it means to care for others.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an interactive experience! We read together, stop to discuss important moments, share our thoughts and predictions, and make connections between the story and our own lives. Students have opportunities to turn and talk with classmates, participate in class discussions, and respond to the text through writing and other engaging activities. Because every student has access to the same book, everyone can follow along and participate in our shared learning experience.\r\n\r\nOne of the best parts of this project has been watching students become truly invested in Roz's journey. Even students who don't always get excited about reading have been eager to find out what will happen next! The class has loved discussing Roz's relationships with the animals and following her transformation throughout the story.
