My students use the materials to practice functional communication, requesting, making choices, turn-taking, and cause-and-effect skills. The switch-adapted toys give students who may have difficulty accessing traditional toys an opportunity to independently activate and participate in play.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching a student use a switch to activate a toy during a therapy activity. The student was able to make the toy move independently and immediately excited and interested in the toy. We used that moment to practice requesting \"more,\" making choices, and taking turns. What may look like simple play to others was actually a meaningful opportunity for this student to communicate, make a choice, and experience independence.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building communication skills through purposeful play. We will use the new toys during lessons focused on requesting, commenting, making choices, following directions, and taking turns.
