These games provide an engaging and interactive way for students to learn important concepts while promoting creativity, collaboration, and confidence. The use of educational games has significantly enhanced how third graders learn and grow, both academically and personally.\r\nOne of the most powerful impacts of educational games is their ability to make learning fun and engaging. Third graders are naturally curious and energetic, and traditional instruction can sometimes struggle to hold their attention for long periods. Educational games capture their interest by turning lessons into playful challenges. This element of fun encourages students to participate more actively and take ownership of their learning. When students enjoy what they are doing, they are more likely to retain information and develop a positive attitude toward school.\r\n \r\nThank you so much for your support in their learning!","fullyFundedDate":1757587251927,"projectUrl":"project/games-games/9591136/","projectTitle":"Games! At first, I viewed coding mainly as a way to build technology and problem-solving skills. However, as my students began coding projects using programs like Scratch, Code.org, and robotics activities, I quickly realized how much these experiences were also helping them become stronger, more confident readers.\r\nOne of the biggest changes I have noticed is in reading comprehension. Coding requires students to read directions carefully and follow each step in order. When they read coding challenges or story prompts, they must understand what each instruction means before acting on it. If they skip over words or misunderstand something, their code doesn't work. This teaches them to slow down, reread for meaning, and look for details—skills that directly transfer to reading stories and informational texts. Debugging code is a lot like finding where a reader might have lost understanding in a passage and going back to fix it.\r\nCoding has also helped improve my students' vocabulary and understanding of language. Even at a young age, they are exposed to new words like \"loop,\" \"sprite,\" \"variable,\" and \"sequence.\" Learning these terms builds their academic vocabulary and helps them practice using context clues to figure out what unfamiliar words mean. I've noticed that when we move into reading lessons, my students are more confident trying to understand new words on their own because they've practiced doing it in coding.\r\nAnother powerful connection between reading and coding in 3rd grade is storytelling. My students love creating their own digital stories and interactive games. To code a story, they must plan the sequence of events, write dialogue, and decide how characters will act—just like writing or reading a narrative. We often talk about story structure—beginning, middle, and end—before they begin coding. This helps them think about how stories are organized and deepens their understanding of plot when we read books together. Some of my most reluctant readers have become enthusiastic storytellers through coding.\r\nCoding also strengthens critical thinking and persistence, two skills essential to reading success. When their code doesn't work the first time, students must reread their instructions, test solutions, and try again. This mirrors what good readers do when they encounter a tricky text—they pause, reread, and problem-solve. My students are learning not to give up when something doesn't make sense. They are developing patience, attention to detail, and the habit of thinking through problems carefully.\r\nFinally, coding has made reading more engaging and meaningful. Many students who once struggled to stay focused during reading lessons are now eager to read instructions, scripts, and storylines for their coding projects. They see a real purpose for reading because it helps them create something exciting. This sense of ownership motivates them to read with more focus and enthusiasm.\r\nIn conclusion, coding has had a powerful and positive impact on my 3rd grade students' reading development. It strengthens comprehension, vocabulary, sequencing, and problem-solving skills while boosting confidence and motivation. By blending literacy with technology, coding gives young learners a fun and meaningful way to grow as readers and thinkers.","fullyFundedDate":1753968732915,"projectUrl":"project/coding-and-reading/9478939/","projectTitle":"Coding and Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Benjamin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7244442"},{"teacherId":7449506,"projectId":9139933,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for helping make our DonorsChoose wish list a reality!\r\n\r\nMy students are absolutely loving all of the items that were made possible through your generosity.\r\n\r\nEach day, they walk into a classroom that feels welcoming, comfortable, and safe, a space where they're excited to learn.
