Learning materials support students who may learn differently or need an extra boost to understand academic content. \r\n\r\nTechnology such as computers, provides an effective accommodation for students to succeed academically. Games such as Candy Land, UNO, Connect 4, Battleship, Sorry!, and Chutes and Ladders have provided engaging opportunities for students to practice essential life and social skills in a safe, supportive environment.\r\n\r\nMany students in autistic support settings experience challenges with social communication, flexible thinking, turn-taking, coping with frustration, and understanding social expectations. Through consistent participation in board game activities, students were able to practice these skills naturally while remaining motivated and engaged.\r\n\r\nThe use of board games encouraged students to:\r\n\r\nImprove turn-taking and patience while waiting appropriately\r\nDevelop conversational skills through peer interaction\r\nPractice sportsmanship, including winning and losing appropriately\r\nStrengthen problem-solving and critical thinking abilities\r\nIncrease emotional regulation when faced with unexpected outcomes\r\nBuild cooperative play skills and positive peer relationships\r\nImprove attention, focus, and ability to follow multi-step directions\r\nGain confidence initiating and maintaining social interactions\r\n\r\nStudents who were initially hesitant to engage with peers began participating more willingly in group activities and demonstrated increased comfort communicating with classmates. Games like UNO and Sorry! promoted flexible thinking and emotional control, while strategy-based games such as Connect 4 and Battleship supported communication, planning, and reciprocal interaction.\r\n\r\nBoard games also created opportunities for staff to model and reinforce appropriate social language, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy skills in real time. These experiences allowed students to generalize social behaviors beyond direct instruction and into authentic peer interactions.\r\n\r\nOverall, incorporating board games into the classroom environment significantly supported the social and emotional growth of students in our autistic support program.
