The kids that I see are largely affected by trauma and poverty. Some come to school only to get lunch. Many find it hard to believe that coming to school has a greater value than working at a fast-food restaurant. Some don't like to leave the house because their neighborhood is filled with violence and drugs. Creating an environment that is therapeutic and inviting is very important to establish trust and building relationships. Building meaningful relationships are key to keep kids coming to school and learning. I work with grades 10-12 and my hope is to help heal students socially and emotionally. I want to keep them in school and I want to see them become happy, healthy and productive members of society. Being able to have comfortable chairs to sit in makes it easier to engage in meaningful conversation. A refrigerator will help me keep healthy snacks for the kids who need to eat.
