Our students loved reading the Maus collection, and we used the books for multiple projects, essays, and discussions. Students were able to engage with difficult Holocaust education topics because of their access to these novels. \r\n\r\nStudents particularly enjoyed the graphic novel-style, and noted how it was a different, refreshing way of learning about WWII. Students were able to discuss and write about personal stories directly from the time period. As a class, we read the novels in tandem with using primary document photos; students were able to see Art Spiegelman's family story and compare it to different historical perspectives. \r\n\r\nOne of the many projects associated with this unit centered around students identifying major themes within the novels and generating their own essential questions. Students then used the novels, their prior background knowledge, and their research on current events to create a poster. Students presented their posters to their peers and shared their experiences. This is a big part of biotechnology students high school science experience. Students have been begging for dissections. We started with our brain dissection as part of our signaling module focusing on the nervous system. Students were stunned at the squishiness of the brains and the smell. Once we got over the smell, everyone seemed to enjoy the experience for the most part. Doing dissections for the first time is an experience. In addition, it is sometimes hard to distinguish fine details of organs, especially in the brain. This is a worthwhile experience for the students.\r\n\r\nWe will be moving forward to using the fetal pig dissections as part of our final year end culmination of our 2 year studies in biomedical technology. Many of our students are interested in entering the biomedical field either in nursing, medical doctors, physician assistants, research, radiology tech. The ability to visualize what we have learned in our curriculum with the dissections is essential to their overall understanding of how cells are the building blocks of organisms.
