My students organized and requested to have an English class that would teach them about their past in a real way and would inspire them to fight injustices all around them. The school did not have a wide variety of novels that would do so. Students will form groups and self-select a novel which will allow them to take ownership of their work and become classroom leaders in teaching the other students about their book. Frederick Douglass said, "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." Even though my high school students know how to read, they are thirsting for books that will set them free to create a world in which their lives matter. Students' voices will then lead the whole class in instruction about the topics in the books, and the authors' techniques and methods for conveying the message. This is the ultimate in student-centered learning.
