Students will have access to a fantasy novel that allows them to analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. They will also be able to determine themes and how they develop and emerge throughout the course of a novel. My students have limited access to this kind of fiction, and they crave any opportunity to connect with and use their imagination. The best way to help students grasp the elements of fiction is by providing them with a variety of literature.
