Every Friday, we have voted as a class on which prize should be the one earned that week. Our classroom culture supports determination and hard work throughout their literacy block, even when a student group is not gaining individual attention from the teacher. I can't say that the prizes motivate students to complete their work or stay on task, we work very hard on being intrinsically motivated by our own goals and ambitions, but the prizes certainly make students feel appreciated at the end of each week. \r\n\r\nSo far, kids have been able to choose from the candy, slime and squishies for prizes since their arrival. This week, everyone is excited to work towards the little \"desk buddies\", small acrylic figurines that they can choose to sit on their desk during worktime. We'll still have journals and special message pens for the next few weeks to use as rewards. We are thoroughly enjoying our new supplies, and they're already making such a positive difference in our daily routines.\r\n\r\nThe Blue Jays are loving all of our new supplies for the school year!\r\n\r\nMy favorite supplies are the markers, paper sleeves, glue sticks, and of course, the headphones! The markers and paper sleeves allow us to move quickly in the classroom — students can write their math problems on their \"whiteboards\" and easily make adjustments as they go. The glue sticks have also been put to great use! We've had several opportunities to cut out pictures from stories and glue them in order of events. The headphones have been a huge help, too, allowing students to work on our literacy program without disturbing one another. All of these supplies make such a big difference in our classroom!\r\n\r\nNow for the kids' favorite supplies — the new baby dolls! They love pretending to feed them and dress them up. The kitchen toys have been another huge hit! The students are always pretending to be top chefs, creating beautiful (and sometimes silly!) dishes. Having a dedicated set of headphones means that every student can fully engage in their lessons without distraction—whether they're listening to science-based stories, exploring virtual labs, or completing digital assessments. The new speaker system has also made it possible for me to share videos and audio aloud during whole-group instruction, and every student can now hear clearly, no matter where they are sitting in the room.\r\n\r\nWhat excites the students most is the feeling of independence and professionalism they now experience. My new fifth graders were thrilled to learn that for book baggies, I would not be giving them plastic bags, or Ziploc bags, or shopping bags. Instead, I let them stand witness while opening the boxes of brand new, sturdy, personalized and mature looking book pouches that we were delivered, thanks to your kindness. Some students were excited to choose a color, while others decided they absolutely wanted just black. Each Friday, they get to visit the classroom library to choose new books if needed, or trade with each other as they can see what books each student has hanging at their desk.\r\n\r\nWhen other teachers and even administrators enter our classroom, the book pouches are on clear display at each desk. The hanging handle makes storage a breeze, and leaves space inside of desks for curriculum materials. In the past, plastic bags of books had to fit into the small desk storage areas, which created book avalanches constantly. These are a beautiful addition to my classroom, and I am grateful! The carpet is also a lovely addition to our book shopping time, so students can search through book bins on the floor in a nice space. \r\n\r\nIt also looks like these bags will stand the test of time, so please know that I will very likely be using them again next year for a new group of students. It is wonderful to know that I can depend on the DonorsChoose community for help in providing quality materials for kids.
