My students grow up in a very impoverished area, inflicted with drugs and violence. But inside the walls of Mastery, they are still held to a high standard of "excellence, no excuses." Every student in our school wants to succeed; it's a matter of finding the proper resources to get them to reach their goal. On the first day of school, my Kindergartners enter with the majority of them not being able to identify a letter (let alone the letter sounds). However, it is our job as teachers to set the bar even higher so that in 10 months they are ready for first grade. The transformation that occurs in their first year of school, from not knowing any letters to becoming fluent readers, is absolutely amazing. It is proof that the achievement gap can be closed and the importance of early childhood education.
