The pencil management system I implemented this year using the toothbrush holders is working wonders -- my students are more responsible with their pencils than in previous years. The labels are used to label EVERYTHING -- folders, workbooks, and students (on the first day and on field trips). The math manipulatives were desperately needed. I finally have enough snap cubes and geometric shapes for the students to use during math lessons. Many students are supported by the use of fidgets or other tools because it helps them to stay grounded and focused in class. When I first introduced the sensory toys to students, they were so excited to have the options available to them to be able to use these. Many students' interests were highlighted in their choice of sensory toys- some like sports, and chose the soccer spinners. Others were more creative, and chose the cube squish toys. It was with great pleasure that I gave each student an option and was able to meet them there.\r\nStudents have not just been using these tools in my room, but across their other classes, and it makes me proud to see the impact they have made in improving their focus. It can be difficult for some of my students to stay in one place for extended periods of time, so providing them with tools that occupy their mind and allow their hands to move gives them the room they need to \"move\" without fully getting up and walking around the space. \r\nI have been working with them to help them understand the importance of identifying feelings and areas that make them feel particularly stressed. With this, I highlight how critical it is to identify ways that we can manage big feelings and stay grounded in overwhelming moments. These small toys help guide my point that there are ways for us to work through those kinds of experiences and allow my students to practice healthy habits in school. \r\nMy hope is that they take this small lesson and continue to develop their emotional regulation, focus, and self-awareness skills outside of the classroom.
