When I came to JPA halfway through the year, my students were distressed about not knowing enough science to get them through the year. I promised I would teach them as much as I could. Unfortunately, we are finding it difficult to learn the material in a way that is engaging and memorable because we have very limited access to supplies in our classroom. Working out of a textbook is one of our only options, and it is not best for most students. In particular, my large population of Spanish speaking students who came from Puerto Rico after being displaced by Hurricane Maria. These school supplies will not only help these students learn content necessary for their future, but it will allow them to feel more comfortable in their classrooms. The colored pencils will be great for making visuals that help my new Puerto Rican students learn. The scissors and rulers will be fantastic for daily use in my classroom, as well as any projects we do for the rest of the year. Currently, without a pencil sharpener, my students are unable to continue work without disrupting another class to use theirs. Having a quality pencil sharpener in my class will remedy that. I am also excited to use whiteboards in my classroom so that I may check for understanding and allow students to be active during a lesson.
