The sun glare on our computer screens had been a daily challenge, making it difficult for both my students and me to see clearly. With these covers installed, we can now work comfortably without eye strain or constant repositioning. I've also discovered that they've transformed my whiteboards – I can now write and erase without using chemical cleaners, which makes transitions between lessons much smoother and more efficient.\r\nI'm also thrilled about the new \"Game Activity\" area in our school library. This addition has transformed the library into a more welcoming and dynamic space where students genuinely want to spend time. It feels less like a traditional quiet-only area and more like an engaging learning hub.\r\nThank you so much for investing in these improvements. The nonfiction genres you provided expose our students to diverse perspectives and real-world issues that make argument writing meaningful and relevant.\r\nIn our classroom, students select texts that interest them, read independently, and create projects demonstrating their understanding. The engagement has been remarkable—students who might typically be reluctant to write have become animated discussing topics like social justice, environmental issues, and cultural identity. Several students have told me these are the first books they've finished in years because they finally got to choose topics they care about. The projects they've created—from video essays to podcasts to visual arguments—have been fun, creative, and intellectually rigorous. They were a bit intimidated by the size of the book, but they quickly grew to love the twists & turns of Odysseus' adventure. \r\n\r\nIt was so exciting to bring a classical text into an urban classroom! I was especially grateful that we had the graphic novel version as well. It was extremely helpful for my English Language Learners (ELLs), but all students enjoyed seeing the way Gareth Hines illustrated Odysseus' journey. My students read The Odyssey out loud with one another, in pairs or small groups, because I wanted them to experience the text it was meant to be experienced...oral storytelling tradition! \r\n\r\nSome activities students participated in included: making mind mirrors for different characters, annotating certain sections of the book & graphic novel, analyzing the text and discussing in small groups, and writing an analytical essay at the end of the unit. Students especially loved discussing Odysseus' loyalty to Penelope. Some argued that he was disloyal, for he cheated on Penelope, while others claimed he had no choice...it was so funny to watch them get excited about these characters. \r\n\r\nBecause of your donation, Philadelphia students were able to step into an epic world and experience classical literature.
