Students learned how to use CAD software to design their own clicker fidgets and then learned how to use slicing software to prepare their designs for 3D printing. Along the way, they worked with measurements, shapes, moving parts, and the engineering behind making a design actually function.\r\n\r\nThe students were excited to see their designs become real, physical objects. They enjoyed watching their creations print and were eager to test out the finished fidgets. When a design didn't work as planned, students made adjustments and tried again. This gave them valuable experience with problem-solving, patience, and improving a design through trial and error.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building students' skills with CAD and 3D printing through new design challenges. Students will have opportunities to create their own projects, test their designs, make improvements, and think about how their designs could solve a problem or serve a purpose. As I was unboxing the boards in class, my students got super excited. Some mentioned that they had already used them in another classroom this year and that they love writing on the boards. I was certainly happy to get them and start using them right away but when I heard some of the students' interest and excitement as well, I was even more eager to use them in class.\r\n\r\nOur first lesson using the boards did not disappoint. Again, the students were very excited to get to use the boards. Several mentioned how easy it was to write and erase their answers and I of course loved knowing that I would not have to be replacing expo markers and erasers anymore! \r\n\r\nWe played a \"Jeopardy\" type review game in class and every student was able to write their answers to show me what they knew. It was wonderful to see all students eagerly writing their answers to share their knowledge, especially the students who rarely volunteer to answer aloud in class. Seeing that made my day! My 8th grade students are currently halfway through our Holocaust memoir unit and while students were working on a writing assignment regarding Leon's reaction to the world outside the Krakow ghetto, I noticed several students pick up the book and continue reading. This is the ultimate gift - inspiring an intrinsic motivation to read, a desire to understand the world around oneself, and the cultivation of empathy. Your donation has allowed for all of this discovery. \r\n\r\nThe book comes to life in our classrooms with Audible narration or read-alouds, and our English department has created visual presentations that complement each chapter. In this way, students feel transported to the realities of the 1940s in Europe. For a few international students, this is their first formal exposure to the Holocaust. To other students, this is their first time learning about ghettos, widespread persecution, and the courageousness of individuals like Oskar Schindler. Our book study has sparked questions, desire to learn more and, ultimately, a frustration with the choices of many during the Holocaust and World War II. \r\n\r\nIn addition, the purchase of additional books allows for students needing extra time/students that were absent to check out a copy of the book from the library for their personal use during the unit. This is a game-changer for students, and an option we have not been able to so widely provide in previous years. \r\n\r\nAgain, thank you for this opportunity to share Leon Leyson's story with our 8th grade students. They immediately wanted to know what we were going to investigate with all that ice. It was a fun reminder that sometimes the simplest classroom materials can create the biggest excitement for young scientists.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite moments has been using ice during investigations where students make observations about temperature changes and phase changes. Having a reliable source of ice means we can spend more time learning and less time trying to gather materials. Students are able to work collaboratively, collect evidence, and connect what they see happening in front of them to the science concepts we are studying.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue using the ice maker throughout our hands-on science investigations. To utilize the magazines in the classroom, students are given time in class to read. Then, I simply ask students to share something interesting that they read.\r\n\r\nFor example, during a past reading session, students shared with the class about a multitude of interesting topics. Some students shared about an invention that a teenager engineered. Students reflected how they have the ability to make positive contributions to our world when they see a need arise. Other students shared about the debate on whether or not humans should be courteous and polite towards Alexa and Siri. That really spurred some interesting discussion on manners and courtesy. Other students read about jet packs which started a lively conversation on what it would look like if everyone rode their jet pack to each class. They were concerned that it might be a bit chaotic, since the hallways can get crowded with bulky jet packs and they were unsure of the risks with students potentially flying in different directions. These were just a few of the conversations that were sparked from the students reading their magazines.\r\n\r\nThe time the students spent reading and discussing their magazines articles was enjoyable and students were engaged. They were extremely appreciative that instead of having to complete an online reading practice program to better their reading skills, they could simply read. All in all, thank you for allowing our students the opportunity to read using Scholastic magazines.
