We teach the concepts of addition, not just memorization of facts. When students get to the point of memorization, we use awards and Smarties as incentives for working hard and trying their best. Your generosity has provided my students with an engaging story that encourages them to laugh, think, make connections, and discover the joy of reading together as a class.\r\n\r\nAs we read The Unteachables, students will strengthen many important fifth-grade reading skills. We will analyze character traits and development, make inferences, identify themes, examine conflicts and relationships, determine the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary, summarize important events, and support our thinking with evidence from the text. Students will also participate in class discussions, respond to comprehension questions, and complete written responses using the RACE strategy. Reading a novel together gives us opportunities to pause, discuss important moments, share different perspectives, make predictions, and learn from one another.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books will help create excitement about reading. The Unteachables is filled with humor, memorable characters, and situations that students can relate to, making it especially appealing to students who may not always consider themselves enthusiastic readers. Having a copy of the novel for each student allows us to read, discuss, and learn together while building important fifth-grade reading skills.\r\n\r\nAs we read the novel, students practice identifying character traits, making inferences, determining theme, using text evidence, summarizing, learning new vocabulary, and analyzing how characters change throughout a story. The novel also gives us opportunities to have meaningful conversations about kindness, perseverance, friendship, empathy, accepting differences, and recognizing that everyone has unique strengths.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is very interactive. Students follow along in their own books as we read together, stop to discuss important events, respond to comprehension questions, make predictions, and share their thinking with classmates.
