While many people use receipt printers every day without thinking about them, for our students with autism and complex communication needs, they provide an important opportunity to practice vocational, communication, literacy, and math skills in a meaningful way. Students take customer orders, operate the point-of-sale system, print receipts, collect payments, make change, prepare drinks, and deliver orders while working together as a team. Having professional equipment makes the experience feel like a real café, increasing student engagement and motivation.\r\nThe most exciting part for our students has been seeing their hard work reflected in a professional-looking receipt. They beam with pride when they hand a customer a printed receipt just like employees do at their favorite coffee shops. That small detail has made the entire experience feel authentic and has encouraged students to take even greater ownership of their jobs.\r\nSeveral students who were initially hesitant to interact with customers have truly blossomed. One of our minimally speaking students now confidently uses his AAC device to greet customers and confirm orders before printing receipts. Another student, who often preferred to work independently, eagerly volunteers to be the cashier because operating the receipt printer has become his favorite role. We've also seen students improve their teamwork, problem-solving, and communication as they help one another navigate each step of the ordering process.\r\nThank you for believing in our students and helping create opportunities for meaningful, hands-on learning. Your generosity is preparing them not only for future employment but also for greater independence and confidence in their everyday lives. Every cup of coffee served is another chance for our students to practice skills that will last a lifetime, and we are so grateful for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1778151695059,"projectUrl":"project/brewing-skills-for-success-empowering-s/10146069/","projectTitle":"Brewing Skills for Success: Empowering Students with Real-World Job Experience","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Dolcemascolo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5328526"},{"teacherId":5328526,"projectId":9696682,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom has truly transformed into a vibrant, communication-rich environment where every student has increased opportunities to connect, participate, and grow. The color printer, ink, and games have allowed us to create engaging, visually supportive materials that meet the diverse needs of our learners.\r\nWe are using these resources daily to print color-coded visual supports, communication scripts, and adapted worksheets that align with our students' IEP goals. One powerful moment happened during our student-run coffee shop: students used newly printed visual scripts to greet customers, take orders, and engage in small talk. With the added visual clarity, students who typically rely on prompting were able to independently initiate conversations—something we are so proud of!\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were incredibly excited. They were immediately drawn to the bright visuals and eager to participate in activities. The board games quickly became a favorite, not just for fun, but as a meaningful way to practice turn-taking, asking questions, and building social connections with peers.\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to expand our use of these materials across settings, including our Farmers Market and classroom-based social groups. We are developing new visual supports and incorporating them into structured lessons that target conversation skills, problem-solving, and functional communication. Our goal is to continue fostering independence and confidence so our students can carry these skills into real-world environments.\r\nYour support has made a lasting impact on our students' ability to communicate and connect. When the tools arrived, students were thrilled to see real cookware, mixers, blenders, and utensils — many had never used these tools before! One powerful moment was seeing students confidently work together to measure ingredients, operate the mixers, and discuss the science behind each step, connecting math and science to real life. These resources are helping students build confidence, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and curiosity through meaningful, experiential learning. Next, we plan to continue weekly cooking labs where students track data like measurements, temperature, and time, and reflect on how STEM connects to food, health, and community.","fullyFundedDate":1763481780555,"projectUrl":"project/building-stem-skills-in-our-classroom-mo/9901547/","projectTitle":"Building STEM Skills in our Classroom Mobile Kitchen!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Katherine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7202652_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1588612976116","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7202652"},{"teacherId":7202652,"projectId":5849267,"letterContent":"Our students have been using the new classroom supplies every day, and the difference has been immediate and meaningful. When the materials arrived, students were genuinely excited — they thanked us for having the tools they need at their fingertips, instead of having to wait for communal resources or go without. The stocked supplies make transitions smoother, support independent work, and allow students to stay engaged in lessons without interruptions. One specific moment that stood out was when a student happily used the new printer paper and toner to print out work independently for the first time, boosting their confidence and sense of ownership in the learning process. These resources have strengthened our classroom routines and helped students feel more equipped and valued. Next, we plan to use these materials to deepen student-led activities and projects, giving students more opportunities to create, collaborate, and learn with confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1633201113366,"projectUrl":"project/x06s-classroom-superstars-super-stocked/5849267/","projectTitle":"X06's Classroom Superstars Super Stocked Room","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Katherine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7202652_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1588612976116","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7202652"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_805","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":429,"numTeachers":64,"percentFrplEligible":93,"percentAsian":18,"percentBlack":39,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":26,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":"6.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.4,"schoolId":805,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 77K on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 77K","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-77k/805"}
