I work with students who rely on speech-generating apps on iPads to communicate. Remote learning has made it especially difficult for students who are non-verbal because their speech-generating devices are their voice. iPad applications such as LAMP, Proloquo2Go, and GoTalk, provide augmentative and alternative means of communicating (AAC) so that non-verbal and minimally-verbal students can express their wants and needs, as well as participate in curriculum-based activities.
The best practice for teaching AAC and helping my students develop language is through modeling and aided language stimulation.
Since our school will be following a blended model this year, an iPad and Apple pencil will allow me to screen-share the students' communication apps while they're learning at home, and provide education to parents to help them model language on their children's devices throughout the day. When students are participating in therapy at school, this iPad will be used in-person both as an assessment tool and to provide aided language stimulation during class and therapy activities.
