In our Special Education English Language Arts (ELA) classroom, standard curricula often overlook both non-traditional learning styles and culturally diverse perspectives. Your gift has changed that by providing high-interest literature that meets our students exactly where they are.\r\nBecause of you, my students now have physical copies of these books to track along visually during our shared readings. The unique novel-in-verse format of Inside Out & Back Again and When Clouds Touch Us provides visually digestible text that makes complex themes of displacement, language loss, and structural changes accessible without overwhelming my students' processing skills. Meanwhile, the humor and candid voice in Americanized has sparked vibrant, meaningful discussions about identity and immigration status, even in our pre-reading exploration.\r\n\r\nWe are at the beginning of our literary journey but we're already seeing a difference in our students. Our non-traditional and diverse learners are especially thriving with these new books. Students who previously felt overwhelmed by dense pages filled with walls of text are finding confidence and joy in the novel-in-verse structure, feeling capable of keeping up and participating fully. Additionally, students from diverse cultural backgrounds are incredibly engaged; they are seeing their own resilience, identities, and lived experiences mirrored in the literature, which has deeply boosted their emotional connection to reading.
